Plastering
Building on the traditional plastering craft
Whilst the traditional craft of plastering remains an important
element in the building process, it forms only part of the plasterers
modern day repertoire.
New technologies, products and systems mean that today's plasterer
is a truly multi-skilled tradesperson who rightly enjoys a high
profile within the construction industry.
The plasterer's scope covers
traditional plaster
the application of coats of plaster onto new or existing brick,
block or concrete
fibrous plastering
the production of decorative mouldings
ornamentation
architectural features
drywall - the term used for plasterboard and plasterboard systems
The development of new Drywall products and systems have significantly
expanded the skills range of the plasterer and increased job opportunities
within the construction process.
Drywall systems extend from the simple application of plasterboard
on timber or light guage metal framing systems. The plasterer
can also play a large part in the external appearance of a building
through the application of external rendering to their facades.
Plasterers also play a fundamental role in the refurbishment and
restoration of historical buildings.
Whilst the origins of the plasterer remains within a craft, today
it is a multi-skilled trade which offers variety and expanded
opportunities with substantial financial rewards available in
a modern construction industry.
Structured Training
In conjunction with contractors, FÁS provides a structured
apprenticeship and training programme to meet the needs of the
industry.
FÁS is supported by the PCA, the Plastering Contractors
Association, who jointly have an active and positive commitment
to apprenticeship and training and, importantly the recruitment
and placement of new entrants.
The opportunity is a mix of on-the-job and off-the-job training
based on seven phases. Modular assessments at each level ensure
passage through the programme at the correct pace to suit each
individual.
Completion of the apprenticeship is normally within four years,
and the apprenticeship is awarded the National Craft Certificate,
which has both national and international recognition.
If you are looking for a career in a building craft, there is
no better option than choosing to be a plasterer.
