UNPLEASANT SMELLS FROM CHINESE BOARD
The GPDA has been made aware of publicity around plasterboards made in China, which reportedly give off unpleasant fumes (sulphur and/or hydrogen sulphide). This is believed to be caused by elements in the locally sourced gypsum used. It does not affect all Chinese board.
The known cases are from Chinese plasterboard installed in Florida USA during the US housing boom.
The GPDA, and through its sister organisation Eurogypsum, are not aware of any Chinese plasterboard being installed in Europe. Moreover there is adequate capacity in UK and Irish plasterboard manufacturing plants so imports from China are unlikely.
Customers should always be cautious about buying any unbranded plasterboard (ie not carrying a manufacturers name) or a CE mark to confirm that it complies with European standards.
